FamFamFam Icon Package in Umbraco!

by Shannon Deminick 13. October 2009 03:58

The FARM has just released an exciting icon package for Umbraco. FamFamFam icons have to be one of the most (if not the most) popular icon package on the net. So big thanks to Mark James for his great icons!!! And now, you can have them all in your content tree :)

It’s amazing how happy your clients can be with some really nice icons!

You can download the package from our.umbraco.org:

FamFamFam icons are licensed under the Create Commons Attribution 2.5 license.

This version is not using Css sprites so you may notice performance issues if you have your browser cache disabled, but you'll have loads of cool icons to choose from. The next version will use CSS sprites so stay tuned.

How do I get the image to show in the dropdown, like how you have it in the screenshot?

Which version of Umbraco are you using? Icons being showed i think is only supported in v4+ BUT until v4.1 comes out the sprite icons still won't be displayed.

@Shannon: Thanks for the reply.

I'm using v4.0.2.1. Is there a setting or a config file that one must edit? I tried to restart the server as well but still doesn't show.

With so many icons available it's hard to choose without knowing what it looks like! And it's not as fun looking via Windows Explorer! :)

That is quite strange as I built the package using 4.0.2.1 and it's running on a couple of our sites. Do you have FireBug installed for FireFox? You can do an 'inspect element' on the drop down and click on one of the option items in it. FireBug should show you that there is a background-image applied to each item (which is the icon). This should help you find out the root cause... perhaps file permissions or something else strange could be going on.

@Shannon,

Don't know what happened but the icons are now showing! I was going to follow your suggestion of taking a look with Firebug and it just came up. Not that I'm complaining. Thanks for your help and the icons look awesome.

It's not only amazing how happy clients will be, I am also very happy to have these!
Been wanting to look into how to add icons. Are you going to do the same for thumbnails maybe?

I have only one little problem, in Chrome the icons don't show up in the list. They're in the source code, and the URL's are obviously correct as it works in Firefox. Maybe add single quotes around the background-image URL? Don't think it would solve much but it's worth a try.

We'll have a look into the icons in Chrome but I have a feeling it could be releated to the standard Umbraco UI problems in 4.0.x with Chrome.

I know that Umbraco 4.0.3 has a lot of Chrome bug fixes in it, which version did you use?

Ah I didn't know there were any issues actually.
Currently using 4.0.2.1 afaik that's the latest stable version. It's no biggie anyway. :-)

@Shannon,

A great package idea :) I have been using the FamFamFam icons in sites I develop for clients for a while, but have just added the odd one or two where needed. It's a great idea to add them all as a package, thanks :)

Hi, I've just installed the package into Umbraco 4.0.3 but the icons are not listed. Are there any configuration options I need to set anywhere? Thanks.

I think this is a bug with the umbraco back office css in version 4.0.3. The icon listing did work in Firefox with Umbraco version 4.0.2. I've been developing on the 4.1 beta and the icons are all listing properly in all browsers. to get this to work in all browsers in 4.0.3 the umbraco backoffice css might have to be tweaked.
